Our Work for Vanderlande Industries

QT-VI Cooperation
We have worked for and together with Vanderlande Industries on a variety of projects. Amongst these are:

  • Study into the Total Cost of Ownership of baggage handling systems
  • Feasibility study on new baggage transportation techniques
  • Tender processes for international airports
  • Reducing BHS energy and maintenance costs

The InnovatieTeam
Bringing baggage handling at the airport to the next level

The InnovatieTeam is a joint initiative of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Vanderlande Industries and QuinTech, aimed at delivering continuous and integral baggage handling innovations at the airport. QuinTech initiated and completed the following projects within the InnovatieTeam:
  • theCube - Design of the future baggage handling process
  • DNA - Improving the narrow-body handling process

theCube
Design of the future baggage handling process

Clients:
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, KLM & Vanderlande Industries

Year:
2008-2009

Challenge:
Design of the future baggage handling process in 2020. Primary goal was to design the most cost- and space efficient baggage handling process, capable of handling the expected baggage flow of 2020 (highest cap/m3 and lowest cost/bag). Current designs are mainly focused on robustness & operational availability; Future designs need to incorporate the demands of cost- and space-efficiency to gain & maintain competitive advantage!

Result:
Together with AAS, KLM & VI, we found that there is high potential in further development of the current process. A roadmap is shown in order to implement step-by-step improvements. Quick wins & the longer term wins are identified. All the participating parties have gained great insight in the possibilities to improve on costs/bag & space utilization.

DNA
Improving the narrow-body handling process

Clients:
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, KLM & Vanderlande Industries

Year:
2008-2009

Challenge:
The study was performed as an integral part of KLM's and Schiphol's continuous push for innovation and service improvement. The challenge was to identify opportunities for innovation in the baggage handling process between the departing/incoming aircraft and the baggage handling system. Keywords: innovation, reduce IR-rate, short throughput time, improve labor conditions.

Result:
Through close collaboration with KLM, Schiphol and Vanderlande Industries, QuinTech succeeded in identifying important opportunities for innovation. Based on QuinTech's integral approach (airport-airline) to the baggage handling process short- and long-term measures were defined to further reduce the IR-rate and improve labor conditions on the platform. A number of recommendations are currently being implemented by KLM, resulting in immediate benefits. Setting up a clear vision for the baggage handling process of 2020 helps KLM and Schiphol set their strategy with regard to the baggage handling process.
